Today, I am almost sure I must have lost my mind. What began as a simple short hike up the honeycomed eastern face of a 520 foot mountain called The Beehive, somehow along the way resulted in a pretty harrowing climb with very narrow ledges and and incredibly steep drop offs.
I have tried to give you a perspective with a few pictures of the kids climbing, but these can’t even begin to tell the story of what they had to encounter and overcome on the way to the summit.
As I made my way up and saw the look on my kids faces I knew they were afraid, but there was really nothing I could do about it b/c by the time we were in over our heads it was simply too late to turn around.
Eventually, we all made it…Thank God! And as we stood on the summit and looked out, we were able to breathe a major sigh of relief, appreciating what we had accomplished, knowing that this would be one of those family memories we would all probably never forget!
In time, I hope our climb doesn’t end up with our kids being in therapy years later, wondering why their dad would have done such a thing to them. But at several points along the way I thought to myself…what have I gotten my family into? At the top we fortunately discovered a much safer route down and we thankfully took it.
Afterwards, we went down to Sand Beach where the boys and I decided to brave the 58 degree waters for a swim. By the way, only 1 of the 3 of us had a wetsuit. But, even with it, it was still another crazy idea of mine that shouldn’t have been entertained, much less executed. I must have lost my mind. Fortunately, by this time, Katinka and Gab had the good sense to veto the idea and choose a much safer, saner hike without us.
All in all, it was quite a day. One I will not soon forget and I am sure the rest of my family won’t either!

imperfect me
The first couple of photos remind me of Blowing Rock and Grandfahter Mountain in North Carolina-two places I was very fond of as a child. I’m sure your kids will remember this trip for a very long while and be happy they did it.

Yeah. All of my memories of Maine and Acadia are rushing back to me. I think I’d stick with the popovers and blueberry ice cream (how did the iced tea compare with Panera’s?). I’m glad you’re making memories. And I’m REALLY glad you’re all still in one piece.

Thanx buddy…me too! The tea is not quite up to par with Panera, but it sure tasted good after a 3 mile hike around the pond. I could get used to the mid day popover and iced tea…perhaps I’ll build that into my weekly schedule when I return?
Hope the Maine memories are good ones and not awful flashbacks…I only want to stimulate happy thoughts you know?

Naw. It was all pretty much awful flashbacks. I, too, hiked around Jordan Pond. But there were neither popovers nor ice cream to follow. Don’t fret about stimulating less-than-happy thoughts. It means I’m not unhealthily envious of the wonderful time you’re having.

I have a few final thoughts about this trip, probably will get to it sometime tomorrow or the next day. Thanx for staying in touch.

It sure looks peaceful at the top! Even though it looked tough, just think of what you guys all accomplished. It goes to show that you can do anything when you put your mind to it.
Thanks for the great pictures – any wildlife around there? (Yeah, one of us had to ask!!)

Thanx Cindy. I was really proud of the kids. They were scared but they persevered and made it. I think they are really glad they did it now, but at the time maybe not so sure. But that is how every challenge is isn’t it?
As for wildlife, no moose yet. Definitely lobster a plenty
. Seals, Sun Fish, Deer, no bears yet, a snake, and alot of sea birds. Not too much to write home about. Hope you are well…thanx for checking in.
